BBNP in trouble.....old news ?

mchambers May 20, 2006 10:10 AM

The park has many outgoing personnel that won't be replaced because of lack of funding ( I guess this is what the article said ). Some of the facilities will be shut down. If you went to the park last year and when my friends went there, the fairly new entrance buildings to collect fees were un-maned. The parks staff of full time employees are taking up the slack as well as part timers. Fees for the park will increase next year from $15 per vehicle to $20 per. I thought there would be mentioning of off tourism by gas prices but it didn't even state this as to one of the reasons but I can't help to believe it is one of the major problems. Can you believe there are 92 park employees of full time ?

I guess the parks are just another place to siphon money from for more popular federal projects? I do not know anything specific by any means, but that is my gut reaction to a park that size being run by so few people.

are not that great for working in federal parks. At least of BBNP. I go on line for employment for that park occasionally and see : there is jobs for concessions, house keepers for the Chisos lodging, ground maintenance, cooks, waitresses/waiters, sales of goods of the Chisos shops and Rio Grande Village. Pay is so so but you pay for rent, you pay for meals with a discount, married folks might get a place to their own but if not married and same sex, you have to share living space with others. No gas allowance. A lot of these jobs are part time so I remembered in years past seeing the same people that was part time working in the park and then working in places of Terlingua and Study Butte as well to make ends meet. And think of the mileage and gas prices of these people having to work so far apart to make a decent income. Of course there are the ones that will just enjoy working at the park and becoming one with the area in all matters. If I was single ( and might be soon ) I would maybe consider.
