Eggs.. help!

ginevive May 20, 2006 10:52 AM

Unexpected eggs; to make a long story short, I need all the help you can give. I removed the eggs from mama's cage and placed them in vermiculite/perlite in a rubbermaid shoebox; put the whole into a 10g tank (I know, I had to improvise; this happened around midnight last night, lol.) I blanketed around it, made sure the eggs are nice and moist but not soaked as well as their substrate not soaked; and I am hunting frantically for good homemade incubatr plans. So help; any links or pics of your homemade, inexpensive yet safe and sound incubator are NEEDED, now!!!

In my last post they sound unheated; but I rigged a space heater and some UTHs to make the air inside the r-maid a toasty 95 degrees.

There's a little info on incubation here at the bottom of the care sheet
http://www.newenglandreptile.com/CareBall.html
Ralph Davis's site has a ton of info also
Most of the BP books have a section on it.
But Personally, I would call just about any of the breeders listed on this site for emergency info... Most are very nice, helpful and will save you time ( and hopefully hatchlings) in this situation.

If you do a search on "Incubators" here on Ks you will come up with a bunch of different posts on home made incubators.
There was a nice one made out of a cooler.

Good Luck!

Here is an idea that I have used in the past before I had a good incubator. You can get a styro-foam cooler, fill it about half way with Vermiculite (or perilite depending on what you have) moisten it. (I used a 1 part water to 2 parts medium. Placve the eggs in the middle slightly buried. Place the cooler onto a heating pad. If you have a thermostat you can use that in conjuction or if not you can place the heater on low or medium and use a thermometer to check the temps of the eggs. I hatched a clutch of Ball Python eggs this way a few years back so it will work in a pinch.

I appreciate it a ton. I have them in vermiculite, in a r-maid shoebox now, above a heatpad. The temps are avtually mor around 85 to 90 but staying steady now. I do want to get a styro cooler today though, and change them into that; but is it ok to move them? I know they can't be flipped over and won't let that happen. Here are a few more pics..
The eggs last night when I first saw them. They are looking much better now that they are moist.

Actually thought he was the female and mama was the male; we were told by "his" previous owners that he was formerly a boreeding male; ever see a breeding male lay eggs??

Easy incubator...

Get a large cooler. Put a couple of bricks into it. Put a smaller rubbermaid container on the bricks. Fill the rubbermaid container with moist vermiculite to a depth of 2 inches. Place egg crating on top of that (keeps the eggs off the vermiculite, allows airflow. Egg crating is used in conjunction with fluorescent tube light so you can find it at stores that sell lights. Or use something else that keeps the eggs off the medium and allows some air flow.) Fill the cooler to the depth of the bottom of the rubbermaid. Use an ebo-jaeger or similar type aquarium heater to keep the water at a constant 88 degrees. Make sure that the temp has stabilized. Place your eggs onto the crating and cover with the rubbermaid lid. Close the cooler.

Measure the temp inside the rubbermaid next to the eggs.

I hope that helps.

The aquarium heater in a cooler is the best way to go. Fill the cooler about half with water, set the heater to 87-89 and put the eggs in a rubbermaid up out of the water on top of a brick. You will be amazed at how well this setup will hold an accurate temp. If it was me I would have let the mom do the work in your situation, but this is probably the next best thing.
