Asexual snake?

suzannemarie May 20, 2006 04:23 PM

I have owned my ribbon snake for 4 years. It lives in ten gallon tank and is the only snake I own. Two weeks ago I noticed that it was extremely fat looking and attributed it to the snake gorging on gold fish. A couple days later I found 2 dead newborn ribbon snakes in the cage. Excuse me, but, what the hell? Has anyone heard of ribbon snakes reproducing without a mate?

sperm retention is not uncommon in these snakes. Was it wild-caught? 4 years is a long time though

Indeed a long time, but not unheard of. I've read about cases like this, with garters separated from others for up to 4 years giving birth.
