my snake killed itself

italktomycereal May 20, 2006 05:43 PM

Sadayakko died yesterday, and the autopsy said that she had killed herself, she had been acting odd for about two months prior, biting herself, not eating, etc. although im worried, how can i make sure my next snake isn't siucidal? she seemed fine when got her a year ago her last owner had abused her, do all abused snakes go crazy? do venamoids ever act like this?

why do you ask about venomoids? the lowlives whoe create them torture those snakes. what have you done?

...cant beleive no one else said that...sheesh

I think what the poster was trying to say, is that venomoids are "abused" snakes and wonders whether they have the same types of responses to the surgeries in which the animal undergoes. I dont think that the individual was insinuating that the Burmese Python is a "hot" snake.

exactly!, anyway jay Kiessling was kind enough to tell me that yakko simply had ibd and that this is what made her crazy, not any abuse

First, we call these necropsies and I would like to know how the vet/tech staff determined that the snake killed itself....that would be nearly impossible. Bites are rarely fatal unless major infections take place but incidental bites will typically not cause a fatality. Instead, I would guess that it could be IBD; whatever it is, I would highly recommend that you quarantine all animals in the vicinity and keep a close eye on them; one virus like this can wipe out an entire collection. Do bloodwork, fecals, etc. It sounds like you are getting a lot of bad information.

I agree with your post 100% and then some. My first thought when I read his post was that the snake was IBD infected and bit itself in uncoordinated spasms in death-throws.

Not only can that virus kill the entire collection it was a part of, but if any animals are or ever were sold to others it can have domino effect devastation of countless other colonies of other unsuspecting herpers of a pandemic magnitude. Due to the simple fact that it often does not show it's effects for many months if not even years in some cases.

Rob, can you email me privately? I have a question for you that is not related to this thread. David_Beauchemin@highendherps.com

Thanks.

I am trying not to laugh, although I shouldn't because obviously if this mis-information was given by a "licensed" veterinarian, well that's sad. I have no formal education and could have easily arrived at a more "lucid hypothesis" to this animals demise. IBD in pythons has a very quick and sudden onset and will kill pythons suddenly, but without the tests Rob was discussing even that is speculative, but much more probable, then Suicide (hehe).
