Help

I was mowing the lawn last Friday, and ran over a Fowlers Toad. Her back leg was completely cut off, and a front toe was injured. I took her to my exotic vet, and he has her on antibiotics and a cream to put on her wounds. He had to remove a piece of bone that was sticking out of her hind leg, and he had to remove her front toe. He doesn't feel she would survive very well back in the wild.. so I bought her a 'Herp Habitat', and a UV light. I have a heating pad under her cage as well. She isn't eating on her own, so we have been force feeding her crickets.

I haven't found a whole lot of information on Fowlers toads and was just wondering if I was doing everything right... and if I should be doing something else to make her feel better? I'd appreciate any information(this is my first amphibian).

Thanks!

first off, that was really nice of you to take the toad to the vet. their care is pretty much teh same as the american toad, so if you were lookin for info and coundlnt find any, just look under american toad. they need a 15 gallon tank when full grown, a loose substrate (something like bed a beast is best) and a water dish. you don't need UV light, but it can't hurt. Feed at least 2x a week, every day or every other is good. they eat crix, worms, and anything you would find outside. thats about it, contact me if you have any questions! thats my american toad tank (20 gallons)

Thank you for the info! I am just worried about her, she isn't moveing hardly on her own, she will lay in the same place for hours. Is this normal? I understand she is under quite a bit of stress, but I feel she should still be moveing some? The only time she really moves a lot is when we are trying to apply the medication, she just can't wait to be put down .

Also- what type of plant (if any) would be good to put in with her? Right after it happend I put pile of grass (with the dirt still on the bottom) and she crawled under it... So I figured I'd put a plant of something like it in the cage with her?

The vet has us feeding her 4 crickets a day (2 in the morning and 2 at night)... she lost quite a bit of weight in a week, so they want her to try and gain some of it back.

This is the cage I bought her... www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTprd_id=845524441806434&FOLDERfolder_id=2534374302030170&ASSORTMENTast_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1148265209465&itemNo=0&Ntt=Herp Habitat&In=Reptile&previousText=Herp Habitat&N=2023694
She has a large water dish to lay in, and 2 'caves'.

Sorry this is so long.... I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right :/.

Thanks so much!

I wouldn't be too worried, most of the time it takes more than a few days to recover from something that bad. The link didn't work, but I know what care you were talking about. For plants I would do pothos plants, they are realy hardy and the toads tend to dig up almost anything you put in their cage. The thing you did with the grass would work fine too, as long as it has a few hiding spots. Do you have a water dish in the cage? If not it is very important to have one, even with a dish I would still suggest misting it daily, it makes them happy. It sounds like everything is going good, if it is hiding and eating at this stage thats good. Good luck and keep me posted!

She actually made it all the way up her ramp and into her other cave last night. She isn't useing her front leg hardly at all, so she got tired half way, but she made it! Every time I've gone in to check on her today she's been in a different spot.

Yeah, I have a 'U' shaped dish, big enough for her to lay in and still have plenty of room to move around. I have 4 flat rocks in it, just in case! I am misting her cage 3-4 times a day right now, since she just has paper towels they tend to dry pretty quick.

With those plants... can I keep the soil thats with them? I read somewhere that the soil had to be sterilized?

She is going back to the vet on Friday. So I'll let you know what they say!

Thanks once again for all the helpful info!

glad to hear she is doing well. for the soil, just get the bed-a beast stuff and you don't have to sterilize it. one brick is enough, cause it expands A LOT! just burry the routs and stuff, they love to dig and burry them selves in it. also it makes them feel more secure. don't worry about impaction, i have all my stuff on dirt and sand and i've never had any problems. it's really good that he's moving around.

Well, her vet appt. went very well. She just needs to gain a little weight. Shes currently 33grams and they want her around 37. But she is eating on her own! She can't seem to catch the crickets when they are in her cage, so I put her in a extra little cage to eat. How many crickets should she be eating every day?

I went and got bed-a-beast. She seems to be enjoying her new cage setup. She has a couple favorite spots and doesn't really move unless shes heading over to the water dish... She doesn't even lay in her 'house' anymore.

She shedded 2 nights ago...that was weird. She was haveing a hard time getting it off on the side with no leg, so I helped her out a little. She is bright and shiny now.

She sure does have a personality... I never realized how funny toads are .

Here are a couple pics I took of her while she was about to eat earyler... sorry they're a little blurry..

good idea to put in her in another cage for feeding, i do that with some of mine. she looks great! if she's shedding thats a really good sign that means she's growing, she is well hydrated and all around healthy. it really depends on the frog as far as feeding, they can go like 1.5 weeks and not loose anything, but i would do like 1, maybe 2 large crix a day. i've found that if you feed like 2 times a week, 4-5 each time, that works well. for you i wouldn't do this cause she's still healing, but maybe later. she looks exactly like mine, good luck!

Just wanted to let you know Molly is doing excellent! She is eating 3 crickets every night, and has gained 9 grams! I added more plants to her cage last night, she spent most of the evening going back and forth between them. She seems to be happy, and perks up when I go into the room.

Thanks for all the helpful info/advice! Molly really appreciates it !
