light cycle

mr-python May 20, 2006 08:26 PM

for those of you who use a 24/7 hour light cycle, do your monitors need an extra dark hide box so the light doesnt bother them, or will a hollow log or Retes stack suffice for them to sleep in at night?

Thanks, Marshall.

Mine have always just gone underground or simply closed their eyes.
Give it enough of the right kind of dirt and it will make it's own hides, when and where it wants them.

Hi Marshall, First, you should provide places they are hide in thats totally dark, no matter what kind of lite cycle you choose. Animals do not sleep at night and stay awake in the day, the same way humans do. They will sleep during the day and sometimes be active at night. Sometimes they will choose to sleep for several days. Of if temperatures are not suitable for much longer. Or stay active, day after day. They are are rarely active "all day".

So its important to allow dark hiding, whether its burrows they build or tight deep crevices, or a combination of both. That is independant of any lite approach. Cheers

well i have a half burried helf log on the cool side and Retes stacks under the warm spot so i think there's enough dark places. one thing though, the dirt substrate right now is only about 3.5 or 4" deep. will that allow a baby red ackie to make a suitable burrow or should i go dig up some more this weekend before it comes?
