How to kill feeders to be frozen?

tsusnakeguy May 20, 2006 09:13 PM

I was wondering how all of yall get your feeders ready to be frozen. Right now I have some rat fuzzies in the freezer, freezing to death. I mean I am not a big fan of rats but it kinda hurts to do that to babies I have seen grow some. I would appreciate some help.

There have been posts about using a CO2 tank set-up to humanely and quickly kill feeder rodents. It is a much better way than just putting them into your freezer.

One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes animals that eyes are still closed don't breath deep enough to be affected by the gas. Shelters can't gas kittens and puppies that eyes are not open. It just doesn't affect them. Do please let me know if rodents are different. I'm very interested in knowing and would be glad if you can gas pinkies and fuzzies.

Pinkies are resistant to hypoxia (just as very small puppies and kittens are) Mother Nature made them this way so that they can survive in a pile under the nursing female.

They can be euthanised with CO2 but it takes a very long time and I usually suggest putting unhaired rodents directly in the freezer as it does the job MUCH faster than CO2. You can even use the CO2 for a short time to create a state of CO2 intoxication and then put the pinkies into the freezer to finish the job (don't leave them out though, even after you think they are dead they will often come back) Once the animal begins to develop hair then freezing is a long, painful death. CO2, done properly is generally considered the humane method.

get yourself a trashcan and dry ice...voila...homemade gas chamber

fauxsanity May 22, 2006 12:04 AM

I can't remember where, but I can remember reading that you should keep the feeders frozen for some amount of time /days weeks?/ so the co2 will dissapate from the feeders before you feed them. maybe somebody with more knowledge can help you on that.

you know i was wondering if freshly gassed rodents would do anything to the snakes, but i feed mine rodents right from the gas chamber with no problems

I am sorry maybe its the fact I have been doing it most of my life but I just put them in a container and in the freezer they go. They dont last long in sub 0 temps. Personaly I would rather freez than be gassed or feel my bones break in the coils of a snake, I mean people comon you are feeding them to a snake who cares how they are taken down???? This is jsut my oppinion and I am sorry if it offends anyone.
