What am I missing?

Antegy Jul 31, 2003 08:48 AM

I just copy/pasted this section from the Mass Herp Laws (found in a link from a post below).

In Massuchusetts...

(b) Snakes: All venomous snakes require a permit. The following snakes may be kept without a permit:

1. All species of boas and pythons (family Boidae), except those species categorically non-exempt pursuant to 321 CMR 9.01(3), and except the Emerald Tree Boa (Corallus caninus), Green Tree Python (Chondropython spp.), African Rock Python (Python sebae), Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus) and all species of Anaconda (Eunectes spp.), which require a permit.

Now I have a Burmese python - I don't see it listed in the exemption list. So I don't need a permit?!?! But what about all that I've heard about any snake over 10 feet requiring a permit in Mass? I can't find any reference to that in this...

Anyone have any input on this?

Thanks,
- Mark

I know you posted this a while back but I thought maybe I could help if you haven't already found an answer.
Chances are no one will ever bother you about permits (if one happens to be required) unless you have a cranky neighbor that doesn't like snakes and knows you have one. If you're really worried about it you can call your local animal controle for information. Or you can wait for someone to aproach you about it and tell the "it's under ten feet it just looks bigger because of it's weight". If they claim it's bigger, hand them a measuring tape and offer to let them measure it. Most animal controle officers won't go in the same room with a big snake let alone put their hands on one. If you just have one or two big snakes, no one really cares so long as things are clean and your not feeding it the neighborhood strays. Just don't flont it around the snooty old nosey neighbor.
