my snake killed itself

italktomycereal May 21, 2006 09:42 AM

Although my snake was a burmese python, she killed herself by punctering some organs and bleeding internally to death. Sadayakko had been having problems for two monhs prior to her death, she wouldn't eat (had to be force fed) and would attack herself. But my question is: Do venamoids ever do this? because if they (since they are abused creatures) it may explain why Yakko went crazy, i have reason to believe her last owner abused her, and i was wondering if it caused her to go crazy. I never abused her. I need to know why she died before i can feel comfortable owning another snake.

I seriously doubt snakes have the ability to "remember" abuse. Actually, what you describe sounds more like a classic case of IBD, in which case I hope you don't have any other pythons, and you need to completely disinfect your cage(s). It's one of the worst things a python can get, is nearly always fatal, and is not curable.

what is ibd?

rosycorn May 21, 2006 12:54 PM

IBD is inclusion body disease, a very serious disease that can hit boas and pythons. The link below is the first google hit for a search on it, and has some info!

of either IBD or other intrusive disease that does the same as the snake appears to be attacking itself. The verdict is out and debatable of IBD or pseudo disease that resembles same affliction of IBD in other species of snakes. Several times of past I have lost near collections of venomous due to an intrusive disease and where the snakes " attacked themselves". No doubt whether it is IBD or other, it is with neurological problems on the snake and as mentioned, very serious as far as spreading if husbandry is not checked or in order. Most cases of these diseases are with wild caught species added to captivity and therefore spread through the kept other snakes in ones collection.

My first experience with IBD was when it had not yet been named, back in the late 70's. It was just called "Stargazing", and most of the work since has been done by Dr. Elliot Jacobsen at U of Fl.

very true if the name still sticks ( stargazing ). My first encounter with IBD or the look-a-like was with my venomous collection back in the early 70ties with a quad of the Mexican Rock Rattlers that brought it in and almost totaled my collection due to my bad husbandry of using snake tongs to remove and replace water containers from cage to cage. Yes I used proper quarantine procedures but totally forgot about cross contamination of snake clamps of changing water bowls ! My loss !

I forgot rattlers got it. I remember now. When you saw the stargaszing, it was too late

Sounds an awful lot like what happened to my Chinese Red Bellied Water Snakes - Sinonatrix annularis.

The first one was swimming around biting itself on the body and tail, and the second one started eating his substrate and swimming sideways like a dying goldfish.

They both had periods of what I guess could only be described as the Stargazing you're all referring to.

Guy at the store said they probably envenomated themselves or each other, but this sounds more likely.

Either way, it is no fun.

what ever it is > it has high effects on species ( other than boas and pythons ) some species of kingsnakes , gray banded, and crotalus, rattlesnakes. AND it appears to effect more of the desert species of both. At least in my observation and keeping.

"Guy at the store said they probably envenomated themselves or each other"

I'd have to find a new store. What an idiot.
