My first snake

syndora May 21, 2006 05:31 PM

Hi everyone, my name's Uriah and I am getting my first snake. After doing some research (and holding a few different ball pythons!) I decided that I want to go with a CB ball python (preferrably that eats f/t food). I have gotten an aquarium and everything the leading websites say I need. I have stabilized the humidity and temperature at recommended levels and have the heat and light on a 12 hour by 12 hour schedule.

Now for the main ingredient! I am looking for advice on which ball python I should get and where I should get it. I am a college student at the moment so my budget is limited for my initial purchase. I know most morphs are out, which is alright. Are there specific het types I might look into? I would like to try breeding later on with at least a chance of something different being hatched (not a new morph, just something different than a nomal). I love the axanthics, but it looks like the het for axanthics are quite expensive.

What do you all recommend? Thank you!

Uriah

Congrats man! Thats fantastic, snakes are a lot of fun. As far as what kind, they are all going to be about the same as far as personality, habits, size. So basically the more exotic the snake, the more the cost. I just got mine at a pet shop. One of these guys can probably cut you a deal on a beauty of a snake though.

Thanks to both of you for the help! I have been excited about getting a ball python since I held my first one and I still cannot wait to find the right one.

The first time i ever even held a ball python was about a month ago and I have been working towards getting my very own ever since. I was at a friend's house warming when she took out her little lady. I hadn't held a snake since I was five and lost a wild gardener in the house (my mom wasn't happy at all...especially when an empty clean diaper was seen crawling down the hallway a month later...), but the thrill was back instantly. This snake was so different though! It wasn't trying to squirm or get away! That alone just about floored me, but when it wrapped around my arm (just above the wrist about two inches from where one checks a pulse) and rested its head looking up at me I totally fell. The little girl just stayed there for two hours while we played cards. I think I lost most of the time because I was so distracted. Yeah, it was amazing and I'm pretty sure I am hooked.

Thanks again for the help and keep it coming! The more the better!

For my first snake I chose a 100% het axanthic ball python. He arrived about twenty minutes ago and is currently in a ball in his new cage. I haven't handled him much so I do not know his temperament yet. I figure a few days to get used to the new place is a good idea. Any tips for me? I am so excited, I feel like its Christmas morning!
