Borrowing snake?

Hello, i like on long island, New York and on my grass there are a few piles of dirt, all which have holes in the going into the ground and a trail in the mud that looks like a snake...i can email a pic of it, the pic is more than 1 MB big so i don't know how to get it on here.

Not sure what did that, but I doubt it was a snake. They have no way to pile the dirt up at the hole entrance like that.

How close is the nearest water source? It looks alot like a crayfish hole to me.
