Caught this HUGE P. c. deserticola...

dustyrhoads May 21, 2006 10:18 PM

about 10 days ago in SW Utah in the Mojave desert. It was orange, yellow, brownish-red and FLAWLESS!
It was a female and around 5 and a half feet. The critter was right in our campsite(!!) and was hunting around a rock pile around mid-day.
Here she is with a few students from my herpetology class.

I was amazed that every reptile we found down there was without a single scar or blemish...

Freak yeah!! That's so cool! I can't wait to get moved back up there this summer. Sounds like your trip was way worth it. Did you keep her?

We released everything we found right where we found them. The trip was awesome! Go check out the three Crotalus species we found within about 12 hours on the venemous forum!
We also found horned lizards, collard's, leopards, night lizards, Sceloporus galore, a few desert tortoises even(!!), garters and few other cool critters.

Congrats Dusty, I really like the neck pattern on that animal. Thanks for the pics, I hope to be getting my PC subocs this week if all goes well.

Have a good one,

Gregg F.

Hey Gregg!
Glad your Panther Canyon babies worked out for ya! I am really glad to see other people getting these...I mean, EVERYONE is going to eventually want to own an orange suboc when these things are finally being produced in great enough numbers.

Talk at ya later!

That's a really nice one for sure. St George area is fun place. The southern range of Deserticola are really clean but not as easily found compaired to northern range.

That is an absolutely beautiful and impressive snake! It was midday when you came across her? What were the temps?

It was around 90 that day, if I remember right. Nice and sunny with a few random sporadic rain clouds...but still sunny.

I keep looking @ that pic and it's awesome. Went on a little field herping adventure this past weekend, and caught a nice 3.5' P. c. deserticola while road cruising!
