Eastern Hognose Questions

hunterjackson May 22, 2006 01:22 AM

I was given an E. hognose today that wouldnt eat...to make a long story short, I put a frog in there tonight, it ate with no problem (the guy had it for about 3 weeks, and tried only mice).

This one is jumpy, tries to strike etc....

Is there any easy way to switch them over to rodents, or just the usual scent and pray?

I apprecaite it.
This is a bit out of my element, give me boids or tortoises...

Yes, scent and pray. They can be done, but it take a lot of patience. Especially if it is WC. I found in the past that scenting with tree frog worked better than with toad, but I don't really know why. If it is not something you feel up to, feel free to send it my way . I am looking for Easterns right now. Had a virus get my breeding group last year, and I really miss them. Oh, another thought, since it is feeding on frogs, make sure you get a fecal done. These guys seem prone to parasites. All of my Easterns where WC (rescues) so I have experience with the feed issues. Feel free to ask any questions.

My WC male eating a mouse about a mth before I lost him....

I will run a float and direct upon next defecation. I appreciate your help. What he ate last night was a tree frog

Hey!, If he ate a tree frog ,at least you know what he likes.I would start with a tree frog for scenting.Sometimes putting the snake with a scented pinkie in a small container(where he can't get away from it)worked for me.I have an adult fem. that started eating rat pinks after only 3 tries. On the other hand I have an adult male that hasn't switched over yet.Good Luck!, & keep trying. jeff
