cool S Ohio finds this weekend

DeanAlessandrini May 22, 2006 11:19 AM

I spent Saturday in S. Central Ohio herping with Jason Folt and my son, Nick.
Some great finds, including my first (and second) Ohio kingsnakes!
Thank you to Jason who shared his S Central Oh expertise to allow us to do as well as we did

First snake I turned up was this gorgeous eastern milk (yes, it’s an eastern!)
..but as red as some syspila I’ve seen!

The following 2 black kings were found within about 50 ft of each other…Jason found the large one, measuring over 46”, and then I found the smaller one a minute or so later.

Those 3 snakes were the highlight, but we also found a nice rat snake, a couple racers, ringnecks, a n. red-belly, an eastern worm snake, a few e fence lizards…and 5 box turtles.
All in one morning / early afternoon!

Nigra # one, the 46”er

Nirgra #2

Here is my son, Nick, with the first and second nigras we’ve found in Ohio!

N Redbelly

E worm snake, a juvie, and opaque

Nick with the very light colored rat snake that we found cruzing in the open.

Great job!

That milk is amazing. was it male or female?

You know Neil, I honestly did not even look to see if it was a male or female. It acutally looked like an adult that just never lost the juvenile pattern. It'll be neat to see if we find others, and if that's typical of the area, or if this one was just a "diamond in the rough"
