How's this for a modular rack?

rainbowsrus May 22, 2006 12:26 PM

Based off of the racks I just built for Sterilite 1754 sweater boxes

I was thinking. If I made thenext ones a little wider I could also use the larger (don't remember the model number) double sized blanket box sideways (same height as the sweater box).

Then I had a flash of enlightenment. I had always planned to use the 1754 racks as backup hatchling racks, I figured I could put three shoebox per shelf with a extra piece of ply or melamine on top to hold down the lids. What if I made all the shelves removable? From my kitchen build I have shelf pins that are a "L" bracket attached to the pin so only thing showing on the bottom of the shelf is the bottom of the "L". With appropriate placed holes, I could reconfigure the rack from 10 shelves of 2 each sweater box or 1 each blanket box to 15 shelves of 3 each shoebox. So I could vary the rack from 10 blanket box to 45 shoe box.

Each shelf is individually wired with heat tape and the power cord routed along the side of the shelf to the front. There is a power strip along the side of the rack to attach the individual shelves to. Also, since all but one of the shelves would be moveable, the only fixed shelf would be the bottom so that is where the thermostat probe would have to be located.

There are also sorts of clips to hold shelves in cabinets. Some would lend themselves fairly well to your project. I think it would work provided you were excessively careful when setting up the drilling jig. That should not be too hard for someone like you, but I would not recommend it to any reptile hobbyist, that's for sure
