Death of pinewoods

buddygrout May 22, 2006 12:39 PM

A student brought me a pinewoods snake last Thursday.
I put it in my 55 gallon terrarium set up. Today it was dead with a large lump in it. The only food item was a narrow mouth frog. Has anyone heard of them being toxic? The snake was rough looking. The boy may have injured it during capture. The lump was pretty large for the snake. I'm just trying to figure out why it died.

I have heard those are toxic to snakes. I had a friend feed them to a clutch of baby malaysian pit vipers and every snake that ate one was dead the next day.

hmmm. I just talked with a guy who has used them for H.simus with no ill affects. I used them for ringnecks, garters, and ribbons before....
I also scented pinks with them for my H.simus. I hope like hell you're wrong about the toxicity!

Well our common friend with the gray beard also voiced they were toxic. In any case, perhaps their toxin affects only particular species. In any event, I shy away from them as feeders because they are too cute anyway.

I have fed narrow mouth toads before to native species (including pinewoods) with no ill effects.
I'm more inclined to think injury in this case.
