Translucent Leatherback

reptifit May 22, 2006 12:56 PM

From our Translucent x Sandfire het. for Translucent we got 2 Leatherbacks. One is a Translucent Leatherback and the other is a normal Leatherback. These are unrelated to any other Leatherback bloodline, so it whas a big surprise for us.
Here a picture from the Translucent Leatherback.

That was a pleasant surprise I'm sure. Good luck with the babies. I may have missed something, but I'm curios if this smoothie/leatherback trait has been proven genetic?

I know last season a friend hatched two in clutch 1, and all 4 clutches that followed not a single one. Same pairing was bred this year, and so far none is clutch 1 or 2. Is this a fluke, maybe something in incubation, or has it in fact been proven genetic?

I was told by another breeder his opinion or thought was that this smoothie trait was brought into vitticepts from a vittican breeding or a rankin x vitticeps hybrid. His thought was that this was put into the genes of vitticepts from these hybrid breedings, and it can pop up randomly years after the hybrid breeding just as any other trait might, color, body shape etc...

B22 smoothies or leather backs have muted scales on the back making them smooth to the touch. kinda like a leather jacket instead of the regular scaled skin a normal beardie would have.

I saw a few at the Dachiu's, and it seems If they are produced out of very high colored lines IMO they seemed or appeared to be brighter or more saturated in color. I guess maybe cause the two tones scales that some beardies have are unnoticable in them.

Someone I know bred last year with the Leatherback. From the 18 eggs I thought 11 where Leatherback. So it looks like it is proven genetic. (maybe he was a very lucky guy )
When it what by incubation I think I had more Leatherbacks. These 2 were from the second clutch from this breeding pair.

I don't think that it was put into the genes by breeding this in from hybrid breedings. You can see it as a "genetic fault" like Translucent, Hypomelanistic and Albino.
