Egg bound - How do you know?

bmulcahy May 22, 2006 03:26 PM

I have a corn in my class that hasn't laid her eggs yet and she is huge! A lot larger than any other female in my class that have already laid their eggs. How do I know if she has a lot of eggs or something is wrong? She hasn't even shed yet. I don't have a reference point of such a big (fat) female - It looks like she ate 6 huge mice. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Don't panic. It won't do any good!

And it's really not needed. If she is huge as you describe, and has not even shed yet there is a very good chance your seeing her ovulate. It's harder to see in corns~ but there is a definate mid body swelling~ looks like she ate several large mice when she hasn't eaten.

This could be fun in your class. IF she is ovulating, once the swelling goes down, there should be the prenatal shed in about 2-3 weeks. Then you can usually let her gently run across your fingers actually count the eggs inside her (just count the what feels like pearls sliding across your fingers). It will be another 2-3 weeks AFTER the prenatal shed before you should expect eggs.

Have fun~ and don't panic.....panicing won't help and I doubt you need to!
