arboreal gecko setup questions

anafranil May 22, 2006 03:58 PM

Hi I'm used to chameleons,so here I am facing different husbandry.I'm waiting for my first Phelsuma m.grandis and as I realised things is done differently with arboreal geckos than with chams..
First of all day gecko enclosures have a permanent substrate where plants are directly planted if I am correct and have a lower layer of pebbles for drainage..
My questions are:
How plants can be planted in the substrate when most caresheets suggest 1-2in of soil??
Secondly they mention about drainage,a drainage to where though?
With chameleons we use a bucket collecting water under the cage.I guess here this is not the case,is it?
Please someone help me out here...
Thanks

Everyone is different on setting up their day gecko enclosures. For all my enclosures I use a coconut bark substrate (chips or earth) and have the plants in pots. It is much easier to clean the cages, like completely clean and change substrate, with potted plants.

Hope this helps.

Like our buddy geckogirl said, it makes it much easier to keep clean, just to left the pots out, when nessesary. Depends on ho wYOU want to do it.

I use soil too. Branches for climbing and some vines here and there wrapped around the branches. Some use bamboo. You can also check on the day gecko forum and get some more ideas and feedback

Look through some of the day gecko pics in the kingsnake gallery for ideas.

Let us know how ya make out.

sorry but where's the day gecko forum,I can't find it anywhere?
By the way I am interested in vivaria which have no pots but a drainage system and have bromeliads and other tropical plants, like a setup for dart frogs.Do you know any site I can find some decent information?
Thanks
