A little Connecticut herping

mikefuture May 22, 2006 04:29 PM

Went out on 05/20. It was overcast and a bit chilly, so I didn't expect to see much. I was pleasantly surprised to find this in the cool spring afternoon. This is the first time finding this species in CT for me, and i've been herping this area since 1989!

Northern Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus edwardsii)

They're plentiful in the right places. Anywhere you find Black Rats or Copperheads, you'll find Ringnecks. Walking along the clearings of power lines is a good place for them also, found frequently with Worm Snakes.

Ha. The habitat I found the snake in is basically a Powerline clearing. I've herped that spot for years with nothing but Garters & Watersnakes (there is water close by). But I have heard of worm snakes, black racers, and wood turtles being found in the area. I feel lucky now with the Diadophis. I'll be herping that spot more frequently.
