crockett county alterna

jcraw May 22, 2006 06:17 PM

last year I bought 110 acres in crockett county off highway 190 approx 10 miles east of iraan. there are tons of canyons. Do you think alterna are that far up. I have seen tons of trans pecos copperheads, lepidus, diamondbacks ect. Just wondering if it would be worth shining a light over it for graybands.

I would not promise they would be common, but I know that they are taken in Iraan, and up in Crane and Upton Counties...

If you have the time I would recomend making the effort.

looky in those obscure areas again as some of those places have been overlooked as a rule lately. What do you all think ?

do you think I ought to hunt the cuts along the roadway or ride around on my place with a 4-wheeler and shine the stone hills on the property.

Buzz had a nice one (I think it was a female) a few years back from those cuts...

Habitat is good, and sympatric herps are abundant (lepidus, pictigaster, bairdi, etc.)

It is only a "stones throw" from the really productive cuts west of Iraan, as well as being a part the same rock formations and mesas as Ft. Lancaster and Sheffield.

We have always "hunted" there on the way back from Iraan and after shining the cuts a few times, it became apparent that the "smaller" cuts produced more animals than those great big tall ones just east of the river... although we have seen several leps on the tall ones... the key is just hitting it often...

Good luck!

No, not really. You were talking about collecting off rock cuts of I-10. The Sheffield loop etc, is off that beaten path. I am not a North of I-10 hunter. Ask Mr. Jedi knight and I am sure he could give you good locales for the stuff you like.

actually the gist of the conversation was if you had devoted any time to hunting the more "unpopular" places with G.B. type habitat - I used the cuts along I-10 as one example. my curiosity then, and now, was if anyone was spending any real time in those areas and if so, what kind of luck they were having.
while not the G.B. expert you or some of the others on this forum are, I do have eyes. it would appear that the habitat is similar enough - dry, fractured limestone faces, etc. - to support G.B.'s and the "associated" species - Leps, Bairds, etc.
would still be interested in hearing from anyone who's hunted these areas.
you an kim have a good trip this weekend pal.

just consider the difference between spending all night along I-10 with cars whizzing by all night, versus a lonely back road where you may see only one or two other cars all night long.

the snakes are there, more in some places than others, but not a whole lot folks spend time looking for them. I have found, and know others that have found snakes along I-10. I'm not planning on spending any quality time on that highway anytime in the future, but there are a few places I might check if I find an opportunity.

sure, I can certainly understand the safety and "quality time" issues. on the other hand, some of those cuts, plus the ones just north an south of I-10 look promising. mostly it's my curiosity getting away from me. thanks for the info.
