bullfrog tadpoles

mom_of_2 May 22, 2006 06:31 PM

I have two bullfrog tadpoles in my classroom. They are living in a 10 gal. aquarium. I use spring water and pump for filtration and circulation. I have had them for about 4 weeks. Back legs just showed up last week. Saturday I was in my classroom and they seemed fine. Came in this morning and one had died. What happened? Do I need to lower the water level because the back legs have started to grow? The lady I got them from sells them for ponds. Most people just put them in their back yard ponds and forget about them. She really did not know what I should do to help them thrive in the classroom. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

Frogs themselves are very delicate to environmental condiations and tadpoles are so much worse. Sometimes they just die off for no apparent reason and theres nothing you can do about it. And then other times, the littlest things can affect them, like not enough oxygen, or maybe chemicals in the water, or even too much waste. Again these could just be slight alterations from the norm. it sounds like you have everything in order and seeing as how your other frog is doing okay, maybe it has nothing to do with you. hope this helps.... Thanks Jon,
I called Petco today and they said I was doing everything right. She just suggested that I provide some dry land because the back legs have started to grow. I had not thought of that because I thought the lungs did not develop until the front legs started to grow. Is that right or could he already be developing lungs?
Anyway, i moved him into a different set up. It has a dry area. But I did fill it with enough water to keep that area very damp. I hope I don't kill it!

Im not sure of exact internal morph points but it would prob be a safe bet to go ahead and give him a land area. He's not exactly going to come on land with two nubs as back feet but it wont be long until he fully forms and it will be ready for him. i dont think that no land wouold have killed the first one at such an early stage but I may be wrong... the same thing happened to one of my bullfrog tads a while ago, and didn't know why. they start to get lungs after the buds for the front legs come in so i don't think that was it, i would suggest feeding: fish food, plants, tadpole food, and algae sheets, they sell these in the fish section and they work really well. good luck with the other ones though. you might want to stop filtering the water, in the wild they usually live in stagnant ponds.
