Need Some "major" Help....

withoutatrace May 22, 2006 08:46 PM

Ok, so I've been searching through all these forums and sites recently and ive narrowed it down to a Blood Python. I was trying to decide between that and a RTB. Now, I have a dog, fish, cinchilla, cornsnake, kingsnake, HAD a ball python, and havea bearded dragon and frilled dragon.
Problem is I cant find any decent informatioon about them, so i decided to come to the pros
First of, where can i get one??????? I want one as young as you can get them and i want it red. I'm willing to spend not more than 200 so hopefully its lower than that. Reptile City had them for 100 shipped but i think they're wild caught or something and they're not true bloods, I dont know. That said, what breeders have them now?! I cant find any sites with any available animals.
Other than that I'm planning to keep it in a 20 high FOR NOW. I siliconed glass to the inside so it has like *2* levels to it. Theres not much room so i just a big water dish in there and just 2 little hiding spots. For bedding I'm using this kind of coconut bedding. I absolutly love it. It holds moisture so well.
I'll probably have more questions later on about them but first i want to see if i can get some answers back. AS much information about them would be greatly appreciated:D

just remeber that bloods are thick bodied snakes and are non-arboreal. therefore when deciding on a tank, wider is better.

How much longer am I going to have to wait for the babies to hatch? And who has them?
Plus do you know if any will be what I want for my price range?
One last thing...How's my setup sound so far? I'm probably not going to have anything on it for heat since it idles around 85ish in my room during the summer. Maybe a small light if the temps drop. I would get a UTH but i cant find any that wont heat up too much.
Lol, sorry...but how long will the baby blood be able to stay in that enclosure??

I would hate to have to sleep in an 85 degree room all summer long! I would set the snake up in a room that didnt get that warm, put an undertank heater under one side (controlled by a rheostat) so that it gets into the upper 80's on the warm side of the cage.
I also would avoid the 20 gallon high all together, it is both too much tank and not enough at the same time. The multiple levels could work I suppoose but seems like a pain to keep clean, and a water bowl big enough to soak in is always a good idea. I imagine it probably has enough floor space for the snake until it is about 6 to 8 months old, but after that it will have trouble thermoregulating because of the snakes size compared to floor space.
If you are set on a hatchling I would keep it as simple as possible to begin with, even a rubbermaid until the snake is well established, then you could always move it into something like a 40 gallon breeder cage once it gets some size to it, keeping in mind it will outgrow that eventually as well.

As far as purchasing, just keep your eyes on the classifieds, just remember if a deal seems to good to be true it is probably farm hatched and that is not the best way to go for your first blood (IMO). We have some coming soon but you sound like you are in more of a hurry then my eggs are.

Good Luck!
