need facts on banded uro

mlove May 23, 2006 12:22 AM

Hi, I'm researching banded uros (U. flavofasciata). Does anyone know what range and area they come from? I found the 1995 The Species of Genus Uromastyx on line and it does not list flavofasciata as a species. I'm intrested in the true banded not the mali-banded crosses. Thanks for your help.

They occur in Mauritania, Western Sahara, and the western tip of Algeria (all north-west Africa). I got this info from Uromastyx by Thomas Wilms.

One more thing, from my understanding, bandeds and Malis are just different subspecies of U. dispar. Hope this helps.

Thanks for helping! The species names are very confusing. What I read listed the u. dispar and u. maliensis as different species but then left u. flavofasciata totally out. You would think there would be more on the web about them.

Did you get the info from his book and if so what year was it written? The 16 Species of The Genus Uromastyx by Thomas Wilms And Mick Fagre is where I got the previous info off the web. You probably have the update version of his research. Thanks again for helping.

That’s taxonomy for ya! This is relatively new info, now its U. dispar maliensis and U. dispar flavifasciata. The book was published in 2004 and then translated for the first time to English in 2005(dont quote me on this). You can get it off of Amazon.com, its cost about $60.00 but very much worth every penny. Glad I could help.

Thank you. I had two of the sites but not all of them. They were a big help in trying to figure this out. I had out dated data sheets I was pulling info from.

That's a huge help. So is there 17 species now? Do you have any idea when the bandeds were added to the list? I definitely need to buy the book you mentioned.

Thanks, I got it now. It took me a while to break down the sub species. You saved me a headache.

yesimhavingfun May 23, 2006 06:40 PM

Glad it helped. There are still only 16 species, with some containing a subspecies or two. U. d. flavifaciata was described by Mertens in 1962.

You are AWESOME! Now I can get some sleep tonight. It was driving me crazy.

Awesome, my butt..... He's an ole curmudgin & cusses like a sailor. Shoots kats for sport & eats road-kill possums. I've seen him with no hair on his head but plenty on his teeth. He's always got a ready smile but ya gotta watch that....

Arredondo May 24, 2006 08:41 PM

But looks like he's gonna really be an advocate for Uros & a great contributor to this forum.
Thanks, Nate.
