Awesome, awesome, snakes!!

mkco79 May 23, 2006 12:04 PM

Hey guys and gals! I currently have a ball and I really love the looks of the bloods! I started out with the ball and said that would be my only snake! I think tho one more would fit nice! lol Another one however is at a minimum 6 months to a year out. I have been doing some reading up on them but wanted some of your alls opinions on the different kinds and what a few pros and cons are about bloods? People say they are harder to care for as far as humidity and all that but I dont really see what the fuss is about and why they say those things! Any comments or advice would be appreciated!!

Thanks all!
Mike

Blood Pythons are very cool serpents. Captive bred and born is the only choice as far as I am concerned. Not "farmed raised" but from a breeder. There are many on this forum with eggs in the incubator; your problem will be too many choices!
Compared to Ball Pythons, Bloods are rarely finicky eaters. Most are garbage disposals and can be prone to obesity. They are however, somewhat timid and shy and providing appropriate hides is critical, esp with neos. They are not unlike Balls in this regard. Bloods do require (or a least appreciate) higher humidity than many species. They are not as demanding as say Tree Boas in this regard, and there is some debate among Blood-keepers as to the humidity requirement. I have taken the advice of those who favor more humidity than less.
Bloods "urinate" regularly and can keep you busy with cleaning chores (stinky). Defecation is a low-frequency event, but worth the price of admission.
You can find a number of good care sheets (try NERD or VPI) and the pool of available animals of all three species is ever expanding. Welcome, as they say, to the addiction.

LOL!! Thanks for the welcome to the addiction!! I knew it was going to be hard to keep just one even before i got the ball! I dont think i have ever wanted a "pet" as bad as i did the python. I am very happy and content with him but I have been reading up on the bloods so instead of getting another ball i figured another species would be cool so i think i have made up my mind on a blood as my second but then after that im done! LOL
Thanks for the reply and the info! Lots of time to decide on what kind and who to get it from and also to catch up on some much needed research!
Im sure Ill pop up in here every now and then with more questions!

Thanks a lot!
