Feeding newly hatched tadpoles?

lonegreywolf20 May 23, 2006 02:43 PM

My fiance and I went out to our local pond this afternoon to check out a beaver family we discovered last year. While there, we found what looked like at least a couple hundred thousand tadpoles. Knowing that our children would love the experience, we caught a few and brought them home. these tads aren't even the size of my pinkie finger nail yet, so I am unsure as to what they are eating. Can someone give me an idea? I know for larger tadpoles I would feed fish flakes or algae wafers. Would this be okay for them as well?

Some say you can shred the flakes very fine or even use the algae wafers. I have also heard of something like boiling some greens to like a paste and then using the paste with a dropper. I believe algae wafers would work though. someone more knowledgable may know but I noticed nobody was replying so I figured I'd at least reply... Jon Runde

Thank you for the reply.

I was wondering if live algaw would be best? I have a turtle tank with a RES in it that I have had for lcose to a year now and the last couple weeks, the algae has gone into full bloom in the tank. So I can scrape off some of the algae if you think that they would like that?

wow, thats a lot of tads! i have about 30 small american toads tads and one large bullfrog tad, they eat: fish food, plants, tadpole food, and algae wafers (don't put too much of these in cause it makes it hard for them to breathe if there is too high a concentration) and an occasiional dead bug. you can also buy algae sheets.
