Chams and gulars and yawns!!

nymph May 23, 2006 04:09 PM

Ok I should have asked this in the post to Lele, but I forgot. My chams tend to display thier gulars quite often, well, usually when they see me, or any human. Is this normal?? Or am I doing something wrong?? Do chams yawn???

extending their gular is a sign of defense/threat/aggression. They will often do this while also flattening their bodies and turning sideways to look as big as they possibly can. As for the "yawn" I am guessing you are referring to the wide open mouth and sometimes shaking their head a bit? That all goes along with the above.

Now, that said, I sometimes see Cyrus do the "yawn/thrash" thing while he is just sitting all alone in his cage! He usually does the gular extension if I move too quickly toward him or I I want him back in his cage and he doesn't want to leave his jungle!

here is a short blurb on the gular extension (2nd Q)
