Hi all ! If I breed my albino male red tail boa to a 100% het albino female red tail boa, what will the rusults be ? I'm under the impression half the babies will be albino, and the other half will be look normal, but will be 100% het for albino. Is this correct ?
Thanks for any and all replies !

The babies will have a 50% chance of being albino and a 50% chance of being het. Therefore, you should theoretically get a litter that is half het and half albino. However, these are only probabilities. You could get all hets or all albinos or any combination thereof.

odds are:

1/2 albino
1/2 normal 100% het for albino

exact numbers / split cannot be predicted

...pairing a 100% het for albino with a normal? What's the expected litter on that?

The expectation is 1/2 heterozygous albino and 1/2 normal. All would look normal. All of the babies could be described as 50% probability het for albino. The actual results could be all heterozygous albino, all normal, or any fraction in between.

By the way, het for albino and 100% het for albino mean exactly the same thing. Stamp out and eliminate redundancy!

Thanks, Paul. I have never bred anything before, so the extent of my genetic knowledge is a brief memory of green and yellow peas back in grade school...and I can't even remember the name of the guy that figured it out!

If het for albino and 100% het for albino mean the same thing, why do people list their snakes as being 50%, 66% and 100% het for whatever ?

viborero May 30, 2006 08:01 AM

50% and 66% means you have a 1 in 2 or 2 in 3 chance of having a het, respectively. 100% means you have one for sure. Therefore, an animal should really be advertised as a "50% possible het for albino".

If I'm wrong, someone please jump in.
