Need everyones opinion

ApexPredators May 23, 2006 09:56 PM

Hello everyone,

I am looking to get into Uromastyx, and wanted everyones opinion. I currently am a varanid enthusiast, and have been keeping them for quite some time now. I have officially ran out of room to keep anymore, so I've been looking into Uromastyx as they are much smaller then the monitors I keep. I was thinking about building a cage for inside, 4x2x2 stacked. 3 cages in all. Anyway, my question is, what does everyone think of Uromastyx? I'm not sure if anyone here has kept monitors, but if you have, how do they compare? I've been wanting to get Uro's for quite some time, but have yet to do so. Every other reptile I've tried getting into, have not even compared to my love for monitors. Thus, I'm a bit hesitant with getting some Uromastyx. I just wanted everyones thoughts about them. Now of course, I know this is a Uromastyx forum and everyone is going to tell me there great, but I'd like opinions anyway. Thanks and I hope to hear from a lot of you.

Cheers,

Adrian

First let me apologize in advance incase my resopnse is showing a lack of concentration.

First, the obvious....uros are great!

Now that that is out off the way, uros are not for the beginner, but it sounds like you're no beginner. I believe there are others here that have monitors as well, but I could be mistaken.

Sounds like you're ready to set up a st of cages that are ready for the average size uros. As long as you're knowledgable of the neccessities of the species, can make those availalble, you should be ok.

Just make sure that you're comfortable with all the necessities of the uros. There's many sites out there with great information...and you've found one already...this one.

Given that this is a uromastyx forum, you'll probably get a lot of positives! That said, I can't compare as Bruce is the only reptile I've ever had. I would probably have to disagree to some extent with the other comment that stated they are not for beginners, though. That was one of the reasons I chose a uro is because those who had them seemed to view them as quite a hardy animal. Still, like any reptile, it's going to take somewhat more work than owning a cat or dog, but I probably wouldn't classify them as a difficult animal to keep. Just my $0.02.

I'd say go for it! We've been keeping various species for about 6 years now & haven't found them to be difficult at all AS LONG AS you follow all the husbandry rules. With proper lighting, temps & diet they're a fairly iron-clad critter. Kinda flighty but, they make up for it in other ways. Everyone's got their favorites but, we like Ornates the most. There's just something about the way they lounge around...

I'm not worried about maintenance and upkeep, as I keep large species of monitors and know what it takes. Thanks for the replies. I haven't decided If I want any yet, but we'll see.

So, what was your point in posting, Mr. Knowitall??

Since you keep varanids it's going to be difficult to choose something that will grab your interest like the monitors do. Uros are nice and I keep some myself and I also keep varanids. My opinion, if you want to keep something other than a monitor that will hold your interest get a Rhinoceros Iguana. They are intelligent, interactive, and quite impressive aesthetically. If you are one of the monitor keepers that allow your monitors to be what they are then a Rhino, raised properly, will give you the opportunity to keep a large lizard that can become part of the family. If I were only allowed to keep one species it would be my Cyclura Iguanas.
