Soaking- How long is too long?

SimplyRed May 24, 2006 02:32 AM

When does soaking start to cause blisters? How long should I let him soak before I take away the water bowl? Why is he soaking for so long?

A couple things cause snakes to soak for extended periods. Whe did it shed last? Some will soak for a few days before shedding. Does it have mites? They soak to relieve themselves of these. They like a fairly compact hide. They feel more secure if they are a little cramped. If the hide is to large they will sometimes use the water dish instead.

I have had the same experience. My python did not leave its water bowl for about 3 weeks. Sure enough It had mites. Look under the scales on the bottom jaw. If it does have mites, they will probably appear as small black dots in the divet or in those scales. Also be careful to look in their pits, as mites will hide in there. Even when my snake was in its bowl for weeks, It never developed blisters though.
