Dumerils growth in first year...

UKBorneoGuy May 24, 2006 04:03 AM

Just wondered what other keepers have experienced with Dum growth in their first years. I still have all 8 of last years clutch and the variation in weight is astonishing. The main reason i know is because some feed better than others. Only 3 out of the 8 feed on mice and the rest on Quail which is another key factor. The one that fed on mice from the start is 300g and the Quail eaters are roughly 180-200g. I have already converted two and am close to converting some of the others.
Here in the UK feeding live isn't really an option so Quail are useful in keeping the snakes within weight when attempting to get them on mice. I'd expect the mouse eaters to reach 400-500g at the end of the first year considering how well they are going now. I've heard reports of 3ft 1kg dums in the first year in the US and some of you guys must overfeed them to get that big. Also when is a good time to get dums onto rats? This must really increase the growth too. Would love to hear other keepers inputs on this subject.

usually the best time time to get a dum onto rats is when you have to give them 3 or more mice.not sure about quail. as for growth, they grow pretty good the first couple years espescially if they are good eaters. not sure about weight because i never weigh mine.
