Something Not Right.

brokenbody May 24, 2006 12:46 PM

This is the first time for me having a leopard as a pet, so if this seems kinda something i should know alread sorry.
My leo's skin looks kinda cloudy, along with that it also looks like her skin is peeling. Kinda like with you get scrached and you have the little skin that pops up. Also with i went to pick her up the other day her vent was open. Her belly also looks a little bigger then normal and she has lost some size in her tail. I also found some pop that was watery, but i don'tknow if it was from her or not. I also have a male in the tank with her. My female is about 4 years old and the male that i got about a month ago is only a year old.
Dose anyone have any ideas on what could be going on?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Not sure about the watery stool but otherwise she just sounds like a shedding Gecko. It is best if you remove the male from the enclosure as you will surely stress her by having him in there 24-7 and they will breed. I had this problem witch is why mine now live apart.

yes it does sound like she is sheding. however the male will overbreed to the female and cause stress which in turn will cause death eventually. if the tail is loosing weight but the belly is getting bigger noticably, she may have an internal infection. you should probably take it to the vet and have it checked for parasites and just a check up would be a good idea. by the way you should always quarantine any new gecko for 3 months to make sure it is not sick. now bothe of your geckos could get sick and you will have a large vet bill. and watery poop is not a good thing, go to the vet and have them both looked at, seperate them now.

I agree with what has been said so far. But I would like to add that she may be going through a pre-lay shed. She's getting fatter, but tail is getting smaller, she and the male are of breeding age, and he's been with her for about a month. Sounds like she could also be gravid and due to lay a clutch in a few days. Take a look at her belly for eggs. www.leopardgeckobreeder.com/ovulation.html If you do see eggs, I would make sure she has a lay box to lay the eggs in, if not she may hold them in and could cause her to become egg bound. Even if this is the case you need to get them both tested. Never through a new gecko in with a collection without quarantine and testing for parasites.

With the male that i got the guy at the pet store kept him alown for me for about 2 months or so before i bought him. I will also take him out of the tank as soon as i can get my old tank ready.
I have also already put in a laybox for her, but i think its a bit too small so i have to make a new bigger one for her. Its hard for me to hold her because the first owner that i got her from never picked her up or anything. It took her a while just to get used to my hands being in the tank. I will try and look at her tonight.
I will also take them to the vet i will call around to some places tomorrow morning and find out if there are any in my area that work with reptiles.

Thank you all so much you have helped me out alot and at lest i have more of an idea what could be wrong with her.

Another thing to mention is my females belly is not transparent enough to see eggs so just because you dont see them dosnt mean they arnt there. A vet visit is the best bet. Good luck, keep us informed please

Today we went to the vet. He ran some tests on them and the both came back fine. He did a Fecal test on both.
Raptar(my male) had one nematode egg, and he needs more weight put on him.Other then that he was fine.
Godzilla (my female)Had nothing wrong with her from the test that he ran. He said that she was a good weight and a great looking leo. He wasn't to sure if she had eggs or not, but he said that there is a high chance that she dose.
He gave me a care sheet on Crickets, it tells you how to prepare home made food for them as well as for mealworms. Other then that, thats about all that he said. He also gave me a few websites to go to so i can read more up on them and get the right information on them insted of what the guys at the pet store say.

Oh and another question, when my females tank gets over 85F she comes out of her rock (no matter the time) and sits there like she is really uncomfortable. Could this be because of her owner before me who never had heat in her tank? And sorry about this being so long.

Have you measured the temps inside the rock? They may be higher than the floor temps, if it's kept on the hot side.
