Weighing in...

DOCRanger Jul 31, 2003 11:35 AM

How do you all weigh your igs? I want to monitor the weight of my adopted guy, but haven't quite figured out an easy way to weigh him. His tail is my biggest problem/concern. (I've weighed lots of snakes and small lizards, but never a 3 1/2 foot lizard.) Also, do you have a special scale for this task and what kind is it? Flash is too big for my smaller scales, but my bathroom scale doesn't seem appropriate either.

Hi, DOC-
I saw your other post, too, and don't have an answer yet, but my ig is at the vet today, and I want to know how to weigh him, too. I'll ask and post about it later.

I'm thinking maybe one of those scales from the supermarket, you know, that you weigh fruit in, or from the deli! Actually, I once found a newborn-baby scale at a flea market. It was from a maternity ward, and dated back to the fifties or sixties. It would have been perfect... long plate to lay the baby on, would probably accomodate most, if not all of an iguana... too bad it didn't work. Another option I'm thinking of (not very realistic one for me, though)- my father owns a scrap metal yard, and he has a HUGE scale that is just a 4'x4' square on the ground that you set pallets of stuff on. It reads out on a little LED screen on the wall- I bet it can weigh anything, even if it's a big, squirming lizard!

Well, you could use the bathroom scale, weigh yourself w/and without Flash. You could stop by your vets. Most won't mind a weigh in. Or you could talk to your local grocery store. Most of them have big scales in receiving. Maybe you can see if you can go around the back? But food and critters, they may not let you. If all else fails try ebay for an old fashioned baby scale. I got mine there for $10. Works great. I used it for kitten rescue. Guess I should go drag it out of the basement. Good luck!
