breed corns?

okreptilerescue May 24, 2006 03:03 PM

I haven't ever bread a snake that layed eggs so i dont know exactly what im doing. what steps do i need to take in order to breed my corn? do i still cool the male? how long do i wait before i put the 2 together? Does anyone know how to make kindof a homemade incubater? the only ones i've seen are for chickens and such. will one of those work? any advice you can give is appriciated. I have 2 or 3 corn snake 'manuals' but they don't give very good directions.... Thank you

I'd say not to, since there's so many people breeding them already. Unless you can get some high end corns, if there is such a thing, and breed them to get a lot of high end corns, it might be worth just keeping them as fun pets...

i was just going to breed her b/c someone said that it may help calm her down. she's not nice. i changed her water last nite and got bit 3 times. she'll come more than half way out of her tank to get you too and she prefers faces. She's not anything special, she was my first snake ever and she's always been mean. Just thought i'd give it a shot... might just let her be mean. (I think its kinda funny that she's the smallest snake i have, the larges being almost 20 ft. and she's the most firey. lol)
thanks for the advice...

Just reach in calmly and gently pick him up. If he bites you, let him. If you snatch your hand back it enforces what he wants by you not picking him up. This could condition him to bite/strike whenever you reach in for him. If you just let him bite you and still pick him up as if nothing is wrong then this habit is not instilled. Granted bites from corns are not as bad as burms or retics but if you want a snake you can take out and handle its better to let him bite now and see that he doesn't get his way. This works well as long as he is feeding regularly. If not then leave him alone until he is and then start handling him. I have been doing this with wild caught adults as well. The bites really are not that bad and after a few sessions of them biting me and not getting what they want (me not touching them) they then calm down because they "realize" there is no threat to them

I've never heard the theory that breeding calms females down and it doesn't hold much water for any of my females.

Most of mine are mild-mannered but when ovulating, preparing to lay and recovering from laying, they can be really unpredictable. The whole process is stressful for them so I wouldn't imagine that it would improve your female's mood - it's more likely to make her even worse in my view.

If all you're looking to do is change her character, I'd say you're onto a loser. Some Corns (a small minority) just don't take to humans and there's nothing you can do about those hardcore ones. If you've tried all the other tricks and they've failed, my best advice is to keep handling to a minimum and wear gloves.

Above all else, avoid breeding. If you're unlucky and bad characters are inherited, you could end up with a seriously p*****d off mama and a whole bunch of ornery hatchlings to rehome!

I guess that makes sense. I have never had an evil corn, so was kinda throwing ideas out there, but this seems to make more sense. Did you ever get a picture of the evil one?

I probably won't breed her. I don't think its worth it. She's not anything special. I do wear gloves and I've gotten to where I don't jump. I guess it'll just give me my needed adrealine rush. lol. I really find it hilarious that I have huge things in my house and garage and have never been bit by anything in my collection. (I did get bit by a 17 ft burm before I ever owned any) I guess I'll just let her be cranky... thanks for your advice.... really appriciate it.
