Best dome light for ceramic heat bulb?

Lia May 24, 2006 03:05 PM

Hi
I know Zoo med- ESU - Fluker make domes that can hold a 60 watt ceramic heat emitter but I wanted to know if any particular brand anyone has had for awhile and likes ?

Thanks

I currently use ceramic light fixtures, the kind you use in a basement with the little pull cord. They have to be hard wired so if you can't wire they really aren't a possibility. Preveously I just purchased a clamp light from a hardware store the kind with the metal shroud. They work fine for the money and the bigger ones are exactly the same as the flukers but can use a higher wattage bulb.

Just some other ideas.

Lol oh no I have to buy it with the ceramic fixture in it . Wiring it would mean I need to have second house from the fire thats going to happen in this one withing a few days .
My boyfriend wiring it means the fire happens within hours . Thanks I am going to ask around see which of the standard reptile type lamps with built in ceramic collars is best .

I would not spend my money on one of the reptile lamps for a 60 watt ceramic heat emitter. Any dome reflective fixture with a ceramic collar will be able to withstand the heat build up from a 60 watt CHE. Just avoid the ones with the plastic collars, as I'm sure you alread know.

If you want to save money without wiring it yourself I recommend a trip to the Hardware store. Many Hardware stores sell utility or clamp lights that have ceramic fixtures with a metal shroud. At less than the price you pay for a fluckers you can get a higher rated better quality product.

Check it out before you drop the cash.

Try your local tractor supply store. They sell ones for chicks. They are usually less than $10 and very heavy duty! I think they are rated for 300 watts! They have a very thick power cord that is grounded. I have one of these that has had a 120watt broader lamp on 24/7 for the last two years and it is still like new!

All reflective domes that use a ceramic fixture pretty much use the same type of ceramic fixture, with the possible exception of the large ones Chris described. So what you are left with is how cool of a color do you want the dome to be.

If you are fine with plain aluminum, then any reflector with a ceramic socket will work just as well as a Flukers or whatever with a painted reflector.

I like your comment about the house burning down lol.

Thanks a lot everyone. I went to 3 places today and they only had one type dome with ceramic collar .
It was thin tin cheesy looking so that wasnt for me. I than looked on internet for chick brooder dome light and though well made was to wide (though I almost bought a small dome chick hatching thing with 3 quail eggs lol) .

I than ordered ESU Reptile Heat & Light Dome, Black - w/ Ceramic Fixture as it looked well made plus I had emailed the other companies last week and no one got back to me . ESU did yesterday thus went with them since couldnt find anything in stores.

Thanks
