Hibernation

holygouda May 24, 2006 08:14 PM

I was just wondering how to put a monitor into hibernation. Do you put him in a cooler room or just turn off the cage lights and/or heat? Do you have to hibernate monitors at a certain temperature? And is the temperature uniform across all species of monitors? I obviously don't know anything about breeding, but I am hoping to in the future. After hibernation does one just put the monitors together and hope they migle? Any light on the subject(s) would be nice. Thanks.

What type of monitors are you trying to hibernate and why? Argentine tegus are hibernated and they breed afterward, but not monitors.

Oh! I used to have tegu's and for some reason I just thought you had to hibernate monitors the same. Thanks for clearing that up! So monitors(salvators, for instance) will breed without hibernating? Is there any reason to hibernate them at all?

Keep them fed and give them good husbandry and they will breed. They do not need to hibernate.
