are racers sexual dimorphic?

rhyion May 24, 2006 10:53 PM

i know with garters, if its a big one its def a female. is this the case with racers too or are both males and females similar in size? ive seen some mating and there usualy is one thats similar length but a bit fatter. are females just fatter? and are females/males more agressive than the other gender?

another thing i noticed is that some racers have blackish bellies while some in the same population have light blue bellies, does this have anything to do with gender?

thanks

I have seen no sign of dimorphism except the usual difference in tails that you see with most colubrids (the males being longer, thicker after the vent.

interesting topic beacuse I have cought many snakes in 20 years and I'm not claming to be the snake whisperer but I am pretty good at tellin a male from a female at a mere glance of the snakes head or eye or something but I know I'm not the only one as Ihave known others able to do the same....JB

I have noticed that some species of snake and especially lizard show a marked dimorphism in that male heads seem proportionately larger than females. I have never really took the time to look that close at racers here because-they are too common-and I could allways check the tail.

Maybe my old eyes never caught that difference.
