FEEDING LIVE OR DEAD PINKIES? Opinions?

SINGKNAKE May 25, 2006 01:51 PM

Most of my young snakes will eat F/T pinkies and fuzzies. I have a brook axantic male, I have had him 3 weeks. He did not eat the first two weeks having offered him on
F/T pinkies several times. I breed my own mice as food, so I decided to try him on live pinkies and
BOOM!!! right away he snatched it from me, and scarfed two of them down. Since i will always have fresh pinks available I guess it won't be a concern for the time being. I will try to switch him over to f/t pinks, I am just glad he is now eating something, it was wild to watch, with F/T pinks the snakes just eat politely, but with a live pinky there is a lot more power and natural killing instinct, and they actually wrap their coils around and this one grabs the pinky in his mouth and chews on it to kill it. Pretty fascinating to watch.I also have one young cornsnake who is the same way. At least i got them to eat.

Just wondered if this was ok everyone else eats fine on F/T.

Thanks

because I raise my own rodents and it is easier.

The best time to switch them over to F/T when they are reluctant to do so is.....coming out of brumation...or offer one F/T and one live.

I have only 6 snakes, and they'll all only do live (not that I've actually been super diligent and determined in offering them pre-killed or f/t).

Unfortunately, I don't have much of an option for live. I live about 30 miles from the closest place get live and it isn't practical for me. I do all f/t. Some of my boas I take tongues and tease feed, when they snatch it(they are all heated under lamp) i shake it and let em constrict. Haven't had one not take f/t(**knocks on wood***)

you could always start a colont of breeder mice for your snakes, I can get a good visual of you shaking the food around for your snake, very cute

I feed live also and there is nothing wrong either way. F/T is cheaper, but I like to give 'em some excercise!

yeah I know what you mean, I think a big part of snake keeping pleasure for me is feeding day, it makes me happy to feed everyone and fill their tummies with a good meal they have been waiting all week for.

Pretty specimen there thanks for sharing
