Sad Day...OT

nymph May 25, 2006 04:53 PM

Well, I know this isn't a fun thing, but I just wanted to tell someone about it. My brother has a Jack Russell, and she is sooooo sweet. My parents live in the country and have some land. We went up to the upper small pasture area, and she came with us. Well, outside of the pen area where we used to keep the goats, there was a nest of 7 baby rabbits and mommy wasn't there. Sophie grabbed and I heard a squeak, and we screamed at her, but it was too late. 3 of them were killed. The upside is that 4 made it and we were able to take them to a vet in the area who does wild animal rescue. I hope they will be ok. They have not even opened thier eyes to see the world yet. I really hate when this kind of thing happens. I feel so bad. I feel like it was my fault. I mean Sophie can get up there on her own, but it was my idea for us to go up there in the first place and check out the old coop. And the duck hutch. But I guess she could have gone up there, and then as my brother said she would have killed them all. I am gonna call tomorrow and see if they are ok.

how sad for you Sounds like you grew up with farm animals and it is always hard to have loss - esp. to babies. Don;t beat yourself up - your brother had a point. I hope the remaining three can be rehabbed. And for the record, I have no kids, so it is not a "mother" thing

I totally understand, I raise atleast 3 of these little furries a year. They are so tiny and sweet, beautiful eyes, beautiful babies.

I had a nest in my back yard last year and would not let my doggie out there for about 2 weeks until I saw that they ha left the nest.

You have a good heart !

I feel for you. I am the type that loves any type of animal. We caught my lab digging in an old hay bale on the property once...it had about 10 baby moles (they were really cute). We did our best to put them back, but mom had probably succumbed some other way. The all died.

We saved 3 little jack rabbits from a hudge burn pile we had once. They all lived to be set free back in the wild.

I trapped a raccoon that was after my chickens, but we did shoot the possum for the same reason (those things are nasty). Over my years...many, many animals.

Don't worry about Will. Guys don't have that same "streak" as us girls, and I have learned to be ok with that. I love my husband, but if it weren't for me, a lot of those babies would have met earlier death.
