Does size matter?

elvis44 May 25, 2006 05:46 PM

.....in feeding. My cb04 female Eastern is about 4.5 feet long and proportionate in girth. Am I getting ahead of myself by offering her a small rat for her next meal? The rat's diameter is about the same size as the snake's but I realize that indigo jaws don't function like a python's. Am I risking potential injury and would I be better off feeding several adult mice to her at each meal? She's been very happy with 2-3 rat pups at a time for the last year. Thanks!

Stick with the rat pups and adult mice. Plenty of time to graduate to larger prey, which often costs more and is alittle harder to get.

just my opinion..

I concur with Fred. But you can also give her chicken wing segments, gizards, hearts, small quail, small fish etc. as long as the item is no larger than a large mouse. She'll love you for it, and pay you back by growing fast!

Thanks for the input. At what point do I "upgrade"? Is it better to just continue with the adult mice and just feed her more (in number) as she grows?

I don't disagree with the others advice but I once asked craig trumbauer how is pines got so big and he said you have to get them on rats asap and always choose a rat a little bigger than the snakes diameter, I guess not everyone wants to get their snakes as potentionaly big as possible.....JB

My rule of thumb was always have to consult your log book to see the last time you fed a Dry..NEVER want to see a "lump" in an indie..
