MITES on my king -a couple of questions

SINGKNAKE May 26, 2006 08:26 AM

I have a young brooks king and he was coiled up in his water bowl this morning getting ready for his shed. I noticed 3-4 little black creatures running around on his head, and a couple others stationary.I am assuming he has mites. Can anyone suggest the best and quickest and cheapest way to deal with this problem? I examined my other snakes and no one else seems to have them (yet) Does this mean I will have to treat everyone for mites? oh dear, this is going to be a long process, I have 25 snakes! lol also are mites pretty common among snakes in captivity? do you think they arrived in a recent shipment I had? or can they just 'arrive' like an unexpected relative? heheheh

Thanks guys

Go to the ball python forum and do a search for mites. There are many post about mites and how to eradicate them.

I had about 50 snakes when I got mites last year...

Get Provent-A-Mite quick. And yes you will need to treat the whole snake room.

Go to your local grocery store and pick up some no pest strip. It will be in the same isle as the raid. cut it up into 2 inch squares and put where it can vent into the cage. You dont want the snakes to touch it. What I did with my rack system is change all substrate to white paper so I can see the mits dying. If you have a rack system use a container with a lid poke holes in it and put the no pest strip in, do not let the snakes come in contact with the no pest!. Make sure each cage that you put it in you remove the water.leave the strips in place for about 4 days, then remove and repeat in 9 days to get any eggs that have hatched.Make sure to remove any decore like branches logs and so on. Ive found this the best way,Ive tryed sprays.this works the best. My info is from some snake books I have such as:

SNAKES
A Comlplete Owners Guide

Hope this helps Mike King

I wouldn't use No Pest in the house. Remember you have to breathe that air too.

I recommend the Provent A Mite. You can order it from The Bean Farm. Do the spraying outdoors or in the garage. Read the directions carefully. Make sure it's dry. Do some research on this product for more info.

Good luck...TC
