Need help!!! Red tumor-like bumps......

Physignathus May 26, 2006 11:52 AM

I just got in these Plethodon jordani salamanders. Also known as Appalachian Woodland salamanders. All 6 have to some degree these red tumor-like bumps on their bodies and legs. I have contacted the seller about this and waiting for his response. I knew I was getting wild caughts, cause to my knowledge no one breeds these, but just wasn't expecting them to have this. Would anyone out there happen to know what these might be and are they treat-able? I know some of ya's will say take them to a vet. Well, I only know of 2 vets that are experienced in herps but I can guarantee none are knowledgable in salamanders. I live in South Carolina. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Did a Google search on these mites. They carry or can carry Typhus fever and other viral diseases. They go through 6 life stages and only the larvae feed on mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. The site only tells how to treat if humans are infected by this mite and ALL chemicals that I saw are deadly to amphibians. I would like to get these salamanders treated as I am trying to establish these in captivity.

These mites are commonly found on certain caudates in those regions at different times of the year. I doubt this species carries typhus...

You will the assistance of a vet as the mites will need to either me surgically removed or treated through the use of medicines such as ivermectin.

I'll look into it with a vet(one with herp experience) and see what we can do. I definately want to save and keep these as I am wanting to establish these in captivity. Wish me luck
