Superpetz (Hamilton)

nicholasg513 May 26, 2006 02:39 PM

I was a member with my faimly in the late 80's early 90's when we used to meat over on gilbert ave, and I just happend to be picking up a couple rat feeders at the superpetz in hamilton last sunday with my daughter and to my surprise there you were with your own table and a couple of reptiles on hand. Im glad gchs is back in the public spotlight and educating the public on reptiles. If it wern't for my busy schedule and you meeting on the otherside of town I would love to join and be an active member again.
On the other hand I feel sorry for some of the reptiles superpetz were selling. I seen a couple of ball pythons going for $99.99 that looked like they were in need of some vet tlc and c'mon they had about 10 - 15 green iguanas together in what looked like maybe a 10 gal cage. This is just my opinion but i wish more pet stores would follow petsmarts reptile policy and not to sell anything that would require larger than a 10 gal tank. whats going to happen to thoes cute $14.99 iguanas when they get about 2 or 3 feet long? are they going to be given the food and caging they require or who know what?
sorry for the rant i just wish people were more educated about reptiles before taking a defenceless life and just winging it. and i would like to thank the 2 girls that gave up their sunday to help educate the public about reptiles.

according to their company policy which states that they will nolongeg sell any reptile that full grown will require a cage larger than a 10 gallon tank. I know this for a fact since i was a manager for petsmart for about 4 years.
maybe they feel thoes lizards will do fine in a 10 gallon tank.....

why general pet stores really shouldnt be selling reptiles unless they can prove that they understand basic husbandry of them. Most donot understand what the reptiles needs are, and are selling them to the unknowning public.

i couldnt have said it better my self. i have had a passion for reptiles since i was very young. and now i breed high end ball pythons not for the money but because this is a hobby for me. im sure i could make a killing selling regular everyday ball pythons in the paper for $75 but it just makes me sick to think when they get about 3 feet long someone would just let them go in there back yard. im sure most of you fellow herpers would agree with me these large pet stores would reather make a buck than make sure the person buying the reptile knows how to care for it.

...Just wanted to take the opportunity to invite you back to the GCHS.

We now meet at the Cincinnati Nature Center. I was also a memeber back in the Gilbert Ave days...

The club is really headed in the right direction and we've picked up a lot of steam over the past few years. Besides a great education committe, we are making strides in conservation and have a pretty decent speaker lineup.

See: www.cincyherps.com

next meeting is July 5
