wagler's question

TexasTreeViper May 26, 2006 09:32 PM

I have read that this species requires air circulation obtained by using small computer type cooling fans set on timers to periodically go off throughout the day in order to prevent lung infections. My question is....Does anyone who keeps this species actually employ these tactics or any similar? A description of your set up would also be appreciated. I currently keep an adult pair with my female being housed in a vision 222 and the male in a large rubbermaid enclosure with half the lid replaced with screen. I am concerned that the air particularly in the vision is a little stale due to the one only vent located in the back. Any comments or thoughts?

I have kept many wagleri over the years, and I never had a fan in their enclosure.
Where did you read this? I would like to see that article.
Thanks!

Never used a fan. Mine did fine at a constant temp of 74-78F in standard aquariums with spagnum for bottom medium. They were misted daily.

It was an online article that unfortunately even though I did print it off, it is at my house. I will post that info tom. I can tell you that it was a very informative piece covering more than just husbandry. Matter a fact, I believe it was brought up in here a month or so back even going as far as saying it was better than the one located under that viperidae sub-forum.

ok Randal I found the article, this quote can be located in the "Wagler's vipers in captivity" sub-section of the Husbandry section

"and, lots of fresh air, for instance by means of small electric fans (like the ones used to cool computers) installed in a large container, or by continuous operation of an air-pump (as used for the aquarium) in a small container. Electric fans should be time-controlled running for a few minutes each hour. Negligence of these facts results, sooner or later, to lung infections which are often due to the common soil bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa".

if you use floor heat in the Vision, you'll get adequate air movement.
