gecko size and diet

shaun59 May 27, 2006 01:24 AM

I have a leopard gecko in a 10 gallon tank with a heat pad on the bottom. I feed him 90 percent mealworms and 10 percent crickets. I got him as a baby 3 months ago, he was 4 inches total length, now he is 6-7 inches. How big will he get is my first question, my second question is can i feed him mealworms all the time, he seems to like them better tham crickets.
Thanks
Also the local pet shop has tokay geckos for 20 dollars, i would love to buy one, but are they too hard to take care of??

Leos will run between 8-12 inches in length. The lone female I have is about 2 years old and 8.5 inches now. Many here feed strictly mealworms, so yes. Mine's a cricket eater, she likes the chase and mealies aren't active enough for her I guess . As for the 20 dollar Tokay, that's a fair price for store bought. They aren't difficult to keep, but most store bought are wild caught and don't take kindly to being handled. Which is not to say they won't mellow out eventually. Be warned, the bite is painful . Hope this helps. Good luck

You can feed them just mealworms if you want, but it's always better to add varieties to the diet. You can try a local insects, like some moths, but be sure there are no pesticide. Keep it a jar or a critter keeper for a day and see what happen. If it's still ok, then you can feed it to your leo.

And as for the tokay, they are cool animals to have. The only problem I have with mine is during cleaning. You have to wear a pair of gloves to be able to handle them. And like the previous poster said, there bite is can painful and draw blood. Mine bit me and I was bleeding quite a bit, so watch out. But all in all, they're pretty easy to care for and fun to watch.

I feed my geckos stricktly 100% supper meal worms. Kirmy has been doing this for 2 yewars with no problems. I have hear horror stories about Tokays witch is why I dont own one. They are my wifes Fave lizard but after hearing about there temper and they are a generaly a look but dont touch animal we decided agenst it.
