janome May 27, 2006 10:11 AM

we are trying to save a baby conhead lizard. its like 3 months old. my friend bought 2 babies at a show a few weeks ago. one died already and the other one is trying to follow. we have to force feed it. right now little crickets. its swallowed a couple but it won't eat or move much. its really skinny and weak.
what else can we do to get it to eat??????? we've looked on line and google serch for info but can't find any help there...thanks anyone.

Not sure how much help I'll be...but I have kept coneheads for many years now and raised quite a few from babies.

If its not eating, then I expect there is something wrong with it.

Has it been tested for parasites?

Are you keeping it warm enough (mid 80'sF)? Temperature is important for proper digestion.

They need to be watered well. I mist them with a fine spray until they drink at least twice a day.

Is it pooping? When you force feed it does it eat the insect?

Can you describe the setup you have for it? Do you provide UVB light? Gutloaded, dusted insects?

yes we did all that. it died. we don't know why. the guy we bought them from say to treat them like anoles and we have anoles. kept a UV light on it. heat light. misted them.it took a couple crickets the first time then the next time it didn't really. so we don't know. but it died. they were CBB. my friend said they were eating when she first got them. we are stumped unless it was just sick from the get go and then buying them and new enviroment stressed them way out.

well thanks for replying. the guy had the adults there. they were SO NEAT.

Sorry to hear that you lost it. Its quite possible that it was one of the ones that just wasn't destined to make it. You tried the best you could....so don't blame yourselves.

You said..."well thanks for replying"...you are welcome. I only wish I could have been more help.

You said..."the guy had the adults there. they were SO NEAT"...I have loved/kept/bred cone heads for over 15 years now and still find them to be neat! They are so spritely! There are two species (laemanctus longipes and laemanctus serratus)with three subspecies to each species. L. longipes are the ones normally seen in the trade. I have had at least 4 out of the 6 but only bred one of them. (I couldn't get pairs of the species most of the time.)

Again...don't beat yourselves up over it. Its sad to lose such a little one, but sometimes it just can't be helped.
