Novice question for the pros

viborero May 27, 2006 12:07 PM

What would I get if I was to breed a het for albino male honduran with a tangerine female? Would the het even come into play, other than to give me 50% het offspring?

Thanks for your time!

Well, it depends. If the female is het for amelanism, which is more-than-likely a possiblility, then 1/4 of their offspring would be amelanistic. However, if she is just a wild-type tangerine, you'd get 1/2 wild-type and 1/2 het for amelanism (meaning that none of the offspring would exhibit amelanism).

What would the split be between the Tri-color and the Tangerine? Are these considered morphs?

Diego,

Neither tangerine nor tricolor is a simple recessive. They're apparently the result of the interaction of many genes. So a tricolor and tangerine can produce mostly one or the other type, or a roughly 50-50 split, or many animals in between the two types, all depending on what complicated genetics they contain from prior generations. When the first response says the female has a good chance of being het amel too, that's speculation, depends on how many het/amel females you think might have been sold into the trade as "normals" without touting their genotype. That IS possible, but IMHO probably less than likely, especially with a tangerine, since people have been working hard to produce tangerine albinos. Good luck with yours.
