eggs: need help fast.

ginevive May 27, 2006 12:31 PM

I have 8 eggs that were laid last week. Three of them are still nice and bright white, but the rest are developing a weird orange/green hue to them and one is pretty badly dented in. I am making a huge effort not to keep them too moist; is this the problem? I have them in a shoebox rubbermaid in vermiculite, inside a cooler that I retrofitted into an incubator with heat tape. The verm's temp is 85.
Are these eggs dying or still viable?

Did you candle the eggs for veins? The temps of your incubator should be more 89-90. Is there condensation on the sides of the shoebox? If they are too moist, try to dry them with a paper towel. They may not be fertile and so they are going to go bad, and sometimes babies just don't develop correctly and die in the egg.

They all showed veins when I used a Mag flashlight to candle them. I thought the infertile ones would look more orangish and smaller, like "slugs?"
Any advice would be appreciated. The temp is around 89 now; don't know why I mistyped that; I made the same mistake on another forum too
I will describe the weirdness on 5 of them; a greenish orange (I know that is weird, but that's how it is) and almost a seethrough-ness. Three of them are white and normal; oddlt, the ones that are clumped together are all weird save for one in the bunch, while the seperated ones are white; is this maybe a fungus or mold that is contagious?

Sometimes they have veins to begin with, but the veins disappear during incubation, and they are dying inside. Hold your flashlight to them again.

I've had gorgeous looking eggs laid before that didn't have a vein in them, so infertile eggs don't always look like slugs.

Being see throughish (sp) isn't good. It may be they are too damp. Wipe them with a paper towel, and put a paper towel over the eggs that are funky.

I saw somewhere on here someone showed a product for mold on eggs, but I don't remember what it was. I am not familiar with this product, but if you can find the thread it may be helpful to you.

I wish I could be of more help to you, I know how frustrating it is. See if you can separate the funky eggs and try and keep them drier with a paper towel over them. If you can't separate them, don't worry, just try to do the best you can keeping the funky eggs drier.

I'm not so sure about fungus always being contagious. I have seen bad eggs alongside good eggs and the good ones never went off. It's difficult to call without being there and seeing everything for myself.

Thanks. Three of the eggs still look good; the others, who knows; they may have been funky to begin with. One is borderline; not sure which way it'll go.
I wish I had a pic of how they look today, but I am not home. Are good, fertile eggs supposed to have any kind of smell/odor?

Good eggs, won't have a bad odor. But eggs can start off looking good and having veins and everything looks great. Then for some reason, something happens to the snake developing inside and it dies.

A number of things can go wrong, but once an animal dies, the egg will start going off. Sometimes the snake doesn't die until well into the incubation period.

Often the veins will start to pull away from the egg when something is wrong, that's why it's a good idea to keep candling your eggs and keeping an eye on their development.

Keep your hopes up, your eggs may make it, but even if they don't, it's probably not something you did, so don't worry or blame yourself.

Thanks; I seriously appreciate it. The good news is, three of the eggs look healthy; maybe there is hope yet. I have seen pics of some hideous eggs that actually hatched out (moldy, etc.)
