Crestie Breeding Not Happening

Geckofanatic23 May 27, 2006 08:05 PM

Well, tragedy has struck, I won't be breeding my Cresties like I wanted to. My year old male has developed a spine defect that I don't want bred into any babies. He has a wierd spinal arch, I've talked to a few breeders and have found out that they have seen this develop before in animals up to a year old. This is really a pain, my male has the most gorgeous harlequin patterning. He could have made some pretty babies. I hope this doesn't bore you guys, but this forum is the only place I know of that would likely feel sympathy. Thanks for reading!

Sorry to hear about your male. Will it affect his quality of life also? That would be really sad. I hope you other one(s) are faring better. Maybe you can find an adult male with desirable traits to breed to your female. This won't make up for loosing your original breeder, but gives some hope to a breeding season this year.
Good Luck. I hope you male can still live a comfortable & happy life.

Thanks for the reply. Basil's quality of life isn't affected much, he looks a bit awkward when he walks, but it is more an aesthetic defect than functional one. He actually kind of looks like a real hunchback. I'm planning on looking for another male, but I'm in no rush. My Leopard Gecko breeding group, which I'm continuously adding to, is laying eggs out the wazoo, so I'm going to plan for crestie babies next season. By the way, would you happen to know what I could cross with my female to produce some really pretty babies? She is a completely banna yellow color all over, the same pattern as a bucksin, but with much better coloring. Thanks for any advice!

I'm glad to hear Basil's still able to live a happy life.
I'm not really sure what would make a good pairing with your female. I'm pretty new to cresties, and def. have not bred any yet. I'm still working on getting my color morphs down Maybe a harlaquin or flame. Then there's also the possibility of pairing a yellow with a yellow & see what you get. You might end up with some stunner yellows, but also some other interesting ones from any recessive traits.
Glad to hear also that your leos are breeding up a storm for you I'm sure you will have your hands full with all those babies.
Good Luck. And keep us updated on your new male (whenever you get him)
