Just got bit questions...

michaelburton May 27, 2006 09:49 PM

I just got bit by my 6 1/2 foot hypo girl. I fed her one rat with no problem but while feeding the second one she went right around the rat and tagged my index finger pretty good. Just wondering what I should do. I put a little hydrogen peroxide on it but I'm not sure what else to do. I have also heard of teeth getting stuck in skin and I'm not really sure how to tell. My guess would be no but I would like to hear other thoughts. Right now there is a bunch of little red dots on my hand, around that is white and swollen and around that is red. I'm guessing its an allergic reaction from the first rat she ate because I am allergic to rats. Thanks.

STOP FEEDING BY HAND, use tongs or hemostats, the longer the better. Also don't have your hand in a direct line if the snake misses. I hold the tongs at a 45 degree angle so when (note it's WHEN, not if) the snake misses the rat, your hand is not next on the same trajectory.

For the bite, should be fine, let it bleed a little and a dab of hydrogen peroxide should do the trick. Keep an eye on it for redness over the next few days.

We've all done it, been bit lots of times myself, most my fault.

Thanks for the help. I was using tongs, large tongs. She was backed up in a strike position and went right around the rat and tongs and got my hand. I will try the 45 degree angle and maybe some gloves next time. Thanks.

I had one almost get me with the tongs straight on and switched to angled away right after that. I've see it since where they miss the rat and damn near fly out of the cage, much longer then the tongs but because of the angle, completely missed me.

Hi my name is David
Bad luck allright but I would put some Iodine on all continuums bites and you should be able to feel or see any teeth left from a snake that size . I would start using tongs to feed her from now on and I start all my snake feeding with tongs so they are uses to the tool . If swelling continues see a doctor . Good luck with all you do.

Just wash it out with cold water, and hold pressure to stop the bleeding. Puncture wounds such as snake bites are usually self sealing as the tooth comes out, a little blood, but it heels quickly.

Oh, and on the bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide it says not to use for puncture wounds. I have used it in the past for snake bites, but you evidently shouldn't.

Sorry for the tipeO that should be nonvenomous bites

Here she is. She was bred by my male albino but I'm pretty sure she didn't take. Hopefully next year.

Very true but I have been tagged a couple of times by one that appeared calm, not agitated and already out of the cage being handled. Can't for sure say I missed something, I also have seen the agitated behaviour and got tagged putting it away.

I have developed over the last year what I believe to be allergies to Rats as well? Just curious if you have any allergic rxns to other mammals? I have never been allergic to anything in the past...and have been stung by many insects etc...

Thanks!
